Intensification of the annual cycle in the tropical Pacific due to greenhouse warming

چکیده
[1] The annual cycle is one of the most important components of the global climate system Yet little attention has been paid to the response of the equatorial annual cycle to anthropogenic climate change. Here we present results from a global climate model with high tropical resolution that simulates a strong intensification of the annual cycle in the tropical Pacific in response to increased greenhouse gas concentrations. This sensitivity of the tropical annual cycle to greenhouse warming can be explained in terms of tropical ocean-atmosphere feedbacks. A possible amplification of the tropical annual cycle is expected to have also profound ecological and societal impacts.

Atmospheric science. Is Katrina a harbinger of still more powerful hurricanes?
Now, however, a connection is emerging between warming oceans and severe tropical cyclones. On page 1844, meteorologists report a striking 80% increase worldwide in the abundance of the most powerful tropical cyclones during the past 35 years. The study lends support to another, independent study published just last month that found a similar intensification in the Atlantic and western North Pa...
متن کاملBiophysical Feedbacks in the Tropical Pacific
This study explores the influence of phytoplankton on the tropical Pacific heat budget. A hybrid coupled model for the tropical Pacific that is based on a primitive equation reduced-gravity multilayer ocean model, a dynamic ocean mixed layer, an atmospheric mixed layer, and a statistical atmosphere is used. The statistical atmosphere relates deviations of the sea surface temperature from its me...
متن کاملTropical Pacific Climate and Its Response to Global Warming in the Kiel Climate Model
A new, non-flux-corrected, global climate model is introduced, the Kiel Climate Model (KCM), which will be used to study internal climate variability from interannual to millennial time scales and climate predictability of the first and second kind. The version described here is a coarse-resolution version that will be employed in extended-range integrations of several millennia. KCM’s performa...
متن کاملSubtropical Forcing of Tropical Pacific Climate and Decadal ENSO Modulation
The relative impact of the subtropical North and South Pacific Oceans on the tropical Pacific climate mean state and variability is estimated using an ocean–atmosphere–sea ice coupled general circulation model. Tailored experiments are performed in which the model is forced by idealized sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the subtropics of both hemispheres. The main results of this stu...
متن کاملAmazon Basin climate under global warming: the role of the sea surface temperature
The Hadley Centre coupled climate-carbon cycle model (HadCM3LC) predicts loss of the Amazon rainforest in response to future anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the atmospheric component of HadCM3LC is used to assess the role of simulated changes in mid-twenty-first century sea surface temperature (SST) in Amazon Basin climate change. When the full HadCM3LC SST anomalies (SST...
